Writing for the web
February 24, 2009
Instructional designers, we write often! Content development, technical information, instructional plans, scripting, etc…
Because of the demand our field places on good writing skill, I will start a Writing for the Web course next quarter through my DePaul NMS Graduate Program.
I script every spare minute I can grab onto.
I write technical content all day for the current project.
Still, I find this course appealing.
Aside from HTML code and font choices, I never really considered writing for the live web much different from that of regular print documents or computer-based training. So, I googled “writing for the web”…
[a few good] Web Writing Resources
- Writing for the Web is Different
- Writing for the Web 3.0
- Writing Well for the Web
- How to Writer a Better Blog
*** Resource #3 says to avoid that whole “click here” navigation tactic. Wow! Let us have a moment of silence for my all too frequent use of CLICK HERE…

De Anna,
Here are a couple of additional resources that I’ve found useful:
Nielsen, Jakob, Writing for the Web, a compilation of Nielsen’s articles about writing for the web. His site is a real find for this topic as well as usability in general.
Redish, Janice (Ginny), Letting Go of the Words: Writing Web Content that Works, Morgan Kaufmann, 2007. ISBN 0-12-369486-8.
And, as a soft plug, I’ve got a section in my book, Managing Writers: A Real World Guide to Managing Technical Documentation, about writing for the web and using the web for technical communication.

This is great! I may copy and paste your exact comment onto the end of the blog post to ensure all readers have the opportunity to read your suggestions (not everyone views the comments area).
Thank you!
